BBB Offers Free Shredding

This free event at the Better Business Bureau will take place on Saturday, September 30th from 9am to 12pm.

 Asheville, NC (September 14, 2017) – Do you have stacks and stacks of papers lying around? Many of the documents we keep contain sensitive personal information and Better Business Bureau is making it easy for you to safely dispose of it all at its free shredding event. This free event will take place on Saturday, September 30th from 9am to 12pm at the BBB offices in Asheville (112 Executive Park). Our co-sponsor is OnTrack Financial Education & Counseling.

Each car can bring up to four bankers boxes of papers to shred. It will all be safely and securely shredded and recycled.

NC Public Transportation Division Strategic Plan – Public Input Welcomed

This October, stakeholders and the public are invited to provide input at community workshops across the state as part of the North Carolina Public Transportation Statewide Strategic Plan.  The workshops are free and open to the pubic.  No registration is necessary to attend.  The NC Department of Transportation is developing the Public Transportation Statewide Strategic Plan to improve bus, rail and paratransit services across the state by better matching transit services to the needs of North Carolinians.

You will become more competent at emailing and improve your skills in navigating the internet and using search engines to search for jobs and occupational information. Come learn the skill levels needed to be successful in your job search and keep your resume in the to-be interviewed stack.

Governor Cooper Signs Law to Make Traffic Stops Safer for Deaf, Hard of Hearing

Governor Roy Cooper signed HB84 into law last week, making traffic stops safer for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people.

Aug. 3, 2017 — Legislation that allows Deaf and Hard of Hearing citizens to request a designation for their driver’s license from the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles was signed into law last week by Governor Roy Cooper.

The bill, HB 84, passed with unanimous, bi-partisan support and will make interactions between law enforcement and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community in North Carolina much safer, said Jan Withers, Director of the N.C. Division of Services for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing.

HB 84 establishes education and training standards for law enforcement, and gives the more than 1.2 million Deaf and Hard of Hearing citizens in the state the option, upon request, to have their driver’s license indicate that they are deaf or hard of hearing.

“This is an important legislative achievement,” Withers said. “It moves us closer to ensuring that communication with deaf and hard of hearing drivers will be as effective as communication with people who are hearing.”

ANRC would like to invite potential ABLE participants, their families, the financial community and all other ABLE stakeholders, to attend a free webinar on Wednesday August 2, from 2:00 – 3:00 EST, focusing on debunking common ABLE myths.

ABLE accounts are now available across the country for qualified individuals with disabilities to save money without jeopardizing their eligibility for public benefits. Despite their widespread availability, lack of awareness and misinformation about ABLE accounts is preventing millions of people from taking advantage of this revolutionary savings tool. This webinar seeks to debunk many common ABLE myths in order to increase knowledge of and confidence in using ABLE accounts.

Walk4Hearing – Asheville chapter information

The WALK4HEARING is our main fund-raising activity for 2017, so we ask everyone please to step up and help.

 

The actual walk takes place in Cary, NC, on Sunday 15 October, but here’s the surprise:      to take part you don’t actually have to go there and walk – there are other ways to help.

       •  SUPPORT OUR TEAM   or    SPONSOR SOMEONE who is walking.

Celebrate the 27th Anniversary of the ADA with an Indoor Picnic and Open House – Asheville

DisAbility Partners will host an Indoor Picnic and Open House Celebration for the 27th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This law has had a significant effect on the lives of millions of people living with disabilities by ensuring we have the same rights and responsibilities as any other citizen.

On Friday, July 14th, beginning at Noon we will serve up tasty fried chicken and a vegetarian option along with all the traditional side fixings and desserts too.

We have a guest speaker, show a short video and read the Proclamation from Mayor Esther Manheimer and have a lot of fun too.

The event is FREE, but you must Save Your Seat by calling us at 828-298-1977 so that we will have plenty for all.

Peer Support Class – Asheville area

What will I learn?

This training involves lectures and group activities. The group activities require respect and support. The trainers will utilize class participation, involvement in group activities, as well as general attendance to assess readiness to deliver peer support services in a professional setting. In addition to providing education to participants, there will be skill-building through role plays, take-home activities, and sharing of personal recovery experiences related to overcoming mental health and/or addiction challenges. Vaya Health’s North Carolina Peer Support Specialist training is a 40-hour program scheduled on five days. A brief graduation ceremony will be held on the afternoon of the final training day. Our current training curriculum meets the criteria set forth by the state of North Carolina.

What do I need to do to be admitted?

You are required to have a minimum of nine (9) months of demonstrated, sustained recovery to be eligible for this training. You must also have a High School Diploma or GED.                                   

To receive a completion of training certificate, students must be present and participate on ALL of the scheduled days and hours. If you are unable to attend all hours, please do not apply at this time. Students who do not complete all 40 hours will not earn the certificate of completion, which is required for NC Peer Support Specialist Certification.

After Class?

  • To become a North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist, you must have a minimum of one year of demonstrated, sustained recovery.
  • For NC PSS certification you will need to have an additional 20 hours of training. Information on this training will be covered fully during Vaya’s 40 hour training.
  • Then you can submit an application to the state to be certified ($15).
