Goal 6 Teleconference Committee

The October 30th 2015 meeting of the Goal 6 Committee convened at 11:15 AM.  We discussed ways to evaluate Objective 6.3.  Tavonne suggested we contact individual independent living centers in North Carolina about veterans, finding out a number of veterans served and which accommodations were delivered.  Teresa mentioned that the 704 report, which has to be sent to RSA, should have most of this information.  She suggested contacting the VA for statistics.  Teresa discussed looking at the services that already exist for veterans and figure out how to evaluate those services, e.g., creating a survey.  Tavonne said she would look into which areas need improvement and she related a story.  She discovered services that were available to her by chance months after working with her social worker and Services for the Blind.  Teresa acknowledged that a problem does exist, that sometimes people don't know what is available to them.  We determined two goals:  1.) to improve communications between service areas and 2.) to evaluate services that exist and see if there are other needs.  Tavonne also suggested listing more links for veterans on the SILC website.  She gave examples of grants etc. that are available to veterans.  Teresa said she would be in touch with John Marens about possible better times for meetings and also with Pamela to see if she's still on the committee.  She also agreed to contact the Shabazz Center regarding veterans' affairs.  The meeting concluded at 11:45 AM.
